Employability Skills  

Students will learn about workplace skills as a means to support their future employment. Careers and employability will be explored through real-world activities and dialogue about knowledge, skills, and attitudes to support success in various roles. Students will learn about effective communication, labour rights and responsibilities, workplace accommodations, and disability disclosure. They will also learn job search skills including researching job postings, preparing resumes, and practicing job interviews. Note: The Employment and Community Studies program is designed to provide students with diverse learning needs that hinder educational success an opportunity to prepare for lifelong learning, employment, and community engagement.

Career Exploration  

Students will explore areas of interest related to career development, employability and community inclusion through experiential (hands-on) learning opportunities. They develop personal goals for this experience and apply class content in a practical setting. Students will participate in weekly class discussions to critically assess their experiences through self- reflection and gain insight into their learning and development. NOTE: The Employment and Community Studies program is designed to provide students with diverse learning needs that hinder educational success an opportunity to prepare for lifelong learning, employment, and community engagement.

Work Experience  

Students will participate in work experiences for a minimum of 100 hours under the supervision of EACS faculty and a workplace representative. Students will apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to develop their employability skills. They will also participate in seminars to discuss theory, experience, and practical issues. Certain work experience placements may require a Criminal Record Check. NOTE: The Employment and Community Studies program is designed to provide students with diverse learning needs that hinder educational success an opportunity to prepare for lifelong learning, employment, and community engagement.

Introduction to Disability Rights  

Students will learn about the history of the disability rights movement and social prejudice against people with disabilities. They will critically assess ablest values and practices including harmful stereotypes, misconceptions, and assumptions. Students will examine disability social justice strategies and resources related to advocacy, self-determination, and leadership. Social Justice in Action  

Students will participate in service-learning activities that use advocacy and activism strategies to influence positive social change on campus or in the community. They will apply what they are learning in class to real-world settings on campus or the community and reflect on their personal values, beliefs, and experiences.
